The G-Shock MR-G line made its debut in 1996 and featured an all metal case and band. It was meant to be a more upscale model that could be worn anywhere. GST-S100D-1A2 has Tough Solar without Multi-Band 6. GST-W100D-1A2 has Tough Solar AND Multi-Band 6. GST-W100D-1A2 is an import model (if you are in the US).

I to have a gshock. Which is the best among these watches.

I want to buy a G-Shock, leaning towards Rangeman, but my wrist size is small (6.5 inch) and I think this watch will look too big. Also I don’t want to compromise on features. Can you suggest best watch with max. Features for my wrist size.

I don’t think the Rangeman is too big for a 6.5″ wrist. You might think it’s too big at first if you are used to wearing smaller watches but you might get used to the size. You should try to find a store where you can try it on and look at it in a mirror too because it might look bigger from your own point than it does from a distance. If you want a smaller G-Shock I would recommend a Tough Solar/Multi-Band 6 model like the GWM-5610, GW-6900, GW-2310, or AWG-M100. For more features like the Twin Sensor or Triple Sensor you will have to go with a larger model.

The Rangeman is an excellent choice even for those with small wrists. I wear a GX56BB and love it very much… and I have 6-inch wrists. I’m planning to get a Rangeman myself. 🙂

No, the altimeter is only for land use. The only G-Shock watches with a depth meter for underwater use are the upcoming Frogman GWF-D1000 and Gulfmaster GWN-Q1000.

1.) GW-9400-1 Rangeman.

Obrigado! Unless budget is a serious factor I would say go with the Rangeman because it has Tough Solar/Multi-Band 6 and the Triple Sensor, and it’s not really that much more expensive. You might also consider the solar-powered GW-9700B-1 but that has a reverse LCD display (and the European model with a regular LCD display costs a lot more). If you don’t need the Triple Sensor then the G-7900 is a fine choice with good features but personally I prefer solar models.

Why do you think the Triple Sensor is valuable? I have to confess that I’m not sure I understand what the feature actually is.

Also, I’m seeing the G-Shock Rescue at roughly $80, but the Rangeman is $200. Are those the prices you’re seeing? Wondering about counterfeits.

The Tripler Sensor has the following: altimeter to measure altitude (useful for hiking and trekking), barometer to measure atmospheric pressure (useful for predicting weather changes), compass to measure direction bearing, and a thermometer. These types of watches are also known as “ABC watches.” If you’re not going to use any of the sensors then you are probably better off saving your money and getting a less expensive model, although for around $200 the Rangeman is a very good deal. Yes those prices seem to be normal for online prices from third party sellers.

I believe they can all withstand that test. Every model design is thoroughly tested for shock and water resistance.

They are all pretty much equal in that regard. Monochrome LCD is easy to read in sunlight unlike a backlit smartphone display.

Which watch would you consuder for world travel - Deserts, jungle treking, rafting etc. I’m looking for a watch which will be tough enough for extreme travel. I like the look of the GW 3000b 1aer. It appears to fit the bill for most of the activities, plus I like the idea of solar power.

As it is water resistent, would you also say it is mud & sand resistant?

Obrigado. I think any G-Shock watch is suitable for extreme travel and will be fine in the mud and sand. Personally I always buy solar models. Officially the current mud-resistant models are the G-9000 and GW-9010 Mudman, G-9300 and GW-9300 Mudman, GW-9400 Rangeman, GWG-1000 Mudmaster, GG-1000 Mudmaster, as well as the GX-56 and GXW-56. All of these are digital-only except for the Mudmaster models. I think any G-Shock will be okay if exposed to mud though some may require more thorough cleaning than others if there is extreme/constant exposure.

No, the GWG-1000 does not have a carbon fiber insert band. It really depends which features you want and which look you prefer, keep in mind the GPW-1000 is fully analog.

That would be a great choice, keep in mind it is a larger watch. Positives are that it looks great with large analog-digital display, has Triple Sensor and Tough Solar/Multi-Band 6. Negative is that it is one of the more expensive Triple Sensor G-Shock watches.

Thank you for publishing a great article. I have the Gulfmaster and I had planned to use it as a dive watch because of the built in compass. Reading Gshock forums and my manual as a guide, it appears I am diving with tanks at my own risk and I cannot operate the buttons underwater (like to activate the compass).

I have read that the recessed buttons cannot be pressed but, you can press the protruding buttons on the Frogman. I’m wondering if you knew, before I ruin a watch, if the Gulfmaster’s triple sensor, the protruding ‘A’ button can be pressed underwater, which means it would have multiple o-rings or a completely sealed housing (but that’s Frogman territory). You will often hear conflicting information about pressing the buttons underwater. Personally I think it is okay to do it as long as the seals are in good shape. On a newer watch it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s possible that using the buttons underwater all the time could lead to the seals failing earlier, though it’s uncertain when that would be. If you want to be safe you may want to go with the new Frogman GWF-D1000 or Gulfmaster GWN-Q1000 which both have the compass sensor and now also a depth meter and are designed to be used underwater.

Obrigado! The GWM500 series (amazon) and MTG900DA-8V (amazon) have larger numbers than other G-Shock watches. For larger than that you might want to consider a Casio Pro Trek watch. Some other G-Shocks that have larger numbers than usual are the GD-350 (amazon), GD-400 (amazon), and GLS-8900 (amazon)

I’ve decided to get the GWM5610-1 as my first G-Shock based on it being the thinnest G-Shock model I can find at 12.7mm. It also has most of the features I am looking for and costs less than $100. Obrigado novamente.

Nice choice! There aren’t really any other thin G-Shocks outside of the 5600 family. There was the G-056 (eBay) a while ago which was only 11 mm thick and the thinnest G-Shock ever (and also the GW-056). There are some G-056 watches on eBay but it will cost a lot more now.

Most do, but the cheapest G-Shocks don’t. There is also “Full Auto” on some models which means it only activates in the dark when you turn your wrist.

Obrigado. Yes, I think Tough Solar is reliable. I have some solar G-Shocks that are almost 10 years old (GW-M5600, GW-225) and a GW-9000 which is 10 years old and they are still working fine with the original rechargeable batteries. They usually stay charged to the maximum without having to leave it in the sun or under bright light, at least for the all-digital models. Even indoor lighting will charge it. If you’re not going to wear it just leave it by a window and it should be okay. But I would say go with your first choice and then get your second choice later.

Obrigado! Yes the AWG-M100 is one of the few G-Shocks these days that is a standard size and not very large, so it would be good for smaller wrists. It has more than basic features with Tough Solar, Multi-Band 6, world time, multiple alarms, stopwatch, timer, and full auto LED light. It’s the best choice for a smaller analog-digital G-Shock.

The Rangeman is tougher, and water-resistant to 200 meters versus 100 meters for the PRW-6100. If you want a very tough watch with the Triple Sensor I would go with the Rangeman, Gulfmaster GWN-1000, or Mudmaster GWG-1000.

They both have Tough Solar power but Rangeman also has Multi-Band 6 time syncing. Also the Rangeman has a metal strap keeper. (Mudmaster GW-9300, not G-9300, also has Multi-Band 6 and carbon fiber strap keeper but that is a Japan-only model). Rangeman is an excellent choice for an outdoor watch and has a lot more features than the Mudman G-9300.

Hey great site, really helpful to slot the different G’s into categories. I’ve had a (large) number of G’s in my time, ranging from the Frogman, Rangeman, Mudman, Gravitymaster and now currently Mudmaster (all tough solar) .. am thinking of going back to the good ol’ Frogman. I’m not a collector however love a good watch. Have owned Omega’s, Tissots and Longines and far prefer Casio’s G Shock for appearance and functionality. I called it over a year ago that G Shock should bring out another Frogman and everyone thought I was crazy. And now they have. I don’t quite understand why such a great watch (Frogman) which is Titanium, carbon fibre and has sooooo many functions and such a great name, why it isn’t being sold in all G Shock stockists in Australia. I will be forced to either pay a premium and order in, or go online. It cant be the price, stockists seem happy enough to stock the MTG models etc. Regarding the new Frogman, what are the main differences between the new depth sensor model, and the old school model?

The new Frogman GWF-D1000 has the same features as the previous GWF-1000 model (Tough Solar, Multi-Band 6, tide/moon, stainless steel interior case), plus depth meter, compass, thermometer, sapphire crystal, and carbon fiber insert band. Also it is a little larger. The size/weight is 59.2 × 53.3 × 18mm and 141g compared to 58.3 x 52.8 x 18mm and 115g.

Obrigado por isso. The GWF-D1000 is damn expensive here in AUS (if you can get it). Around $1700. Still pondering on whether I get it, or get my other preference, a GW7900B-1 which is not a bad package for the price! The new Frogman is probably worth the price considering its features although for a non-analog G with the only differences being the materials, depth sensor, compass and thermo it is hard to justify. Around $1000 would be more on the mark. What is your opinion on the GW7900B-1 with the negative display? My only concern is that due to its age/release date the sensors/technology will not be up to scratch compared to the same sensors/tech being released today.

Yeah there seemed to be a very limited supply of GWF-D1000 watches in America as well. It’s not available on ShopCasio or Macys anymore, and we’re not seeing any discounted prices from third-party sellers. I think the GW7900B-1 is one of the best looking G-Shocks, but I recently bought a DW-5600BB-1 that has a reverse LCD display like the GW7900B-1 and I find it very difficult to read in low light. A lot of people have the same complaint about the reverse LCD displays on G-Shocks. There is also the GW-7900-1ER (amazon) which has a standard LCD display but for some reason it never got a U. S. release so it is more expensive to obtain. I think the Tough Solar and Multi-Band timekeeping features will always be useful. I am still wearing a GWM5600A-3 from ten years ago and haven’t had to change the battery yet.

Which G-shock would be best for a ten-year old boy. He wants a g-shock, but some we have tried are too big. He would like one with a world clock, analog face, alarms, stop watch and countdown features.

A GMA-S110 from the S Series matches those requirements. It is about 30% smaller than a full-size G-Shock GA-110. A lot of the S Series watches have more feminine colors but the dark gray GMA-S110CM-8A would be a good choice for boy.

Thank you, everyone should own at least one G-Shock! For analog models the G-100 and AWG-M100 are not as big as watches like the GA-100. I would suggest the AWG-M100B-1A (amazon) or AWG-M100A-1A (amazon). For digital the DW-5600 and GW-M5610 are the smallest models. Also DW-5600 and GW-5600 are not the extra-large size.

I just got a G Shock king of G watch and I am worried because it looks like were not having sunlight for a couple of days here in the Philippines.

How long before my watch will turn off? Is there a battery in it too and should I stop worrying about not being able to get it bathed in sunlight?

Don’t worry about it. The rechargeable battery can go 11 months on a full charge with no sunlight. A few days isn’t going to be a problem. Just try to keep it charged fully when you can. It can charge from indoor lights too.

They are the same. The CR and DR codes just mean that they are meant for export outside of Japan.

For a big guy I think the GWG-1000 Mudmaster is the best looking. A G-STEEL model would be a good choice too if you want a more refined look.

hi, i have been looking through various sites over the last 3 days until i came across ur article, i had a Casio Illuminator series for almost 13 years before it gave me problems. I am basically looking at a big, rugged, water and shock proof solar powered watch that’s digital. I would like one that offers a pedometer, can u suggest the best choice for me? The pedometer is an extra but i would like to have it. I like the Frogman but it may be out of my budget.

I would recommend the Rangeman GW-9400 or Mudman G-9300. There is no G-Shock with a pedometer but you can look into waterproof smartwatches at ToughGadget.

Yes for a large solar G-Shock that is a good choice and a lot more affordable than the Rangeman. Most of the Tough Solar models around $100 or less are the smaller models. Other large and affordable solar models are the GW7900B-1 (amazon) and GR8900A-1 (amazon) but I would suggest going with a positive LCD display like the G9300-1 as it is easier to read.

I would suggest #1, the GWM5610-1. It is one of the smaller G-Shocks.

Obrigado! I’ve never had a problem with my G-Shock watches rusting from saltwater, but I was fishing and diving once or twice a week so it wasn’t constant exposure. The G-Shock Gulfman G9100 (amazon) uses titanium parts and is officially rust-resistant (it says “Rust Resist” on the band), and it has a tide graph. I think the tide graph can be useful but it gives limited information and does not predict the actual heights like a more comprehensive tide chart would.

So, i think i shouldnt be worry again for the rangeman into saltwater although it is not titanium. Beside, it’s mud ressist would be good for the swamp..

So then just think about the tidegraph (with the limitation) and titanium, if it would be worth to make my day worry free then would pick the gulfman.

They all have similar features. The GA700 is larger than the others, has a front light button, and a longer estimated battery life. I would suggest picking the one you like the look of the most.

Uma questão. I don’t see many different straps or band for g shock. Is it hard to change due to the proprietary size/shape/screw? Can I put a nato strap?

Thanks, you would need to get a strap adapter to use a nato strap but I’m not sure where to get one for that model. The most common strap adapters are for the 5600 series, DW/GW-6900, and Rangeman, but those are digital models. There are also strap adapters for the GD/GA-1XX watches but none of those are solar. If you are worried about the seal you can do a pressure test at a watch store after changing the battery. Unless it is reassembled improperly or the o-ring is worn out it should be okay.

My question is;I am going to buy a GWN-1000 since I want a positive display for sure I narrowed my choices to GWN-1000-2ADR and GWN-1000F-2A the problem lays here;is the blue band of GWN-1000-2ADR too flashy? or the golden rim of GWN-1000F-2A more flashy?

I think the gold bezel on the GWN-1000F-2A makes it flashier than the GWN-1000-2A. The GWN-1000-2A is a lighter shade of blue but I wouldn’t consider it flashy (but any non-traditional watch color will draw attention). Also the finish on the GWN-1000F-2A body and bands is glossy. I was considering the GWN-1000-2A too but I ended up buying the GWN-1000C-1A since I don’t use the LCD display that much.

A positive LCD display has black digits. A reverse LCD display has a black background and light digits. Sometimes a reverse LCD display can be harder to read at an angle or in low light. There are GG-1000 and GW-9400 models with both types of displays, it depends on the specific model.

Oi! which watch would you recommend for a female in corrections? I will be inside all day so will the solar be reliable? Also need one with a pretty bright back light and be able to wash it with soap. Seems like all the rugged fancy/classy ones are for men only. Could a female get away with wearing some of the men’s styles or would it look silly?

Solar should be okay indoors, especially if it’s an all-digital model. The watch can be charged from indoor fluorescent lights. The higher-end analog models might need more light to stay fully charged. I would recommend the GW-6900 or the GW-M5610 . They are both solar-powered, have a bright EL backlight, and excellent water resistance. They are a normal size and not extra-large so they are good for females. A lot of women wear men’s G-Shock watches, even the larger models.

Do you know if any G-Shocks can display the date in UK format (ie DD/MM) rather than US (MM/DD). I was sure some of them used to do this, but I can’t see any now that do.

Ótimo site! However, it’s almost impossible for me to make a right choice, so I could use some advice. I’m looking for a watch with solar and analog compass. I like the GWN1000 Gulfmaster, but I’m not much of a sea type, so don’t need tide information etc. Are there any other watches to look for?

In the same price range consider the Pro Trek PRG-600, for a little more the G-Shock GWA-1100 from the Gravitymaster aviation line.

I am curious whether there are any differences between models designated for specific regions. For example, would a CR or DR model display the date differently than those designated for Europe (4-19 vs 19-4)? And besides cost of shipping, are there any tangible reasons why JF models fetch higher asking prices?

Really excited to buy my first G-SHOCK in 30 years. Was given a solar DW-5000 style by my cousin when I was a kid, Velcro straps and all. That thing was truly a tank of a timepiece!

There isn’t any difference between CR, DR, and EU models. Those codes are just used to designate the intended market and besides that the watches are the same. In the case of JF models being more expensive than their export counterparts (assuming we are not talking about Japan-exclusive models), it could be a combination of several factors, shipping being one of them. The pricing for certain models may just be set differently depending on the country/market (and not all based on a single currency) and exchange rates may play a role too. Hope you enjoy your new G-Shock!

Hi do you think is it worth to have MRG model? Considering its price, it is very close to a up scale watch price or even more expensive like Tag Heuer etc. what is your take?

Yes I think it is worth it because it is made in Japan at Casio’s special Yamagata factory and it is a very nice watch, but I think it also depends on the buyer’s financial situation. Personally I don’t buy very expensive watches, but if I did I would buy it. 🙂

No I think that is the limit for all G-Shocks with thermometer sensor.

What model would you recommend for caving? I work at an underground river/cenote place guiding people and we need a water resistant watch.

Sounds like you would want something that has good visibility in the dark. I recommend a model with the “EL Backlight” and one that has an auto or full auto EL backlight so that you can activate the backlight by turning your wrist instead of having to press a button. I would suggest GW6900 and from the top 10 list: GWM5610, G9300 Mudman, and GW9400 Rangeman. Mudman and Rangeman would be good because they also have a digital compass.

Looks like I’m interest with new model mentioned in this page, in #19, G-STEEL GSTB100-1A Large Tough Solar Analog Watch with Bluetooth. I like all features on it.

But I have small wrist, around 5″ (around 17.5cm).

Is it OK to wear and use this G-STEEL GSTB100-1A on daily basis as my primary watch? Is it not too big to see by other people?

Hmm, I can’t really answer that, that’s up to you. It is the style these days to wear big watches but with a 5″ wrist it might feel too big. You might want to look into the G-STEEL GST-S310-1A which is smaller and looks similar, but it does not have Bluetooth or Multi-Band 6.

Thanks G-Central for your suggestion. I like G-STEEL GSTB100-1A because it has automatic dual time zone functionality and I need to use it in my daily basis, between two countries time zone, my home country and my residence country. Let me see the features in G-STEEL GST-S310-1A. Really appreciate your effort and time to answer my questions in timely manner.

Yes, the GSTB100-1A has much better features. Hmm, well my wrist is 6.5″ and the original G-STEEL fits okay (I don’t have one but tried it on at the store). I think it will probably fit but what’s most important is if you are comfortable wearing a big watch.

Can you please give me a recomendation regarding a functionable watch i can use. I need something that that has mutiple alarms that will alarm everyday, a timer for my work related stuffs and a long battery life as i don’t really have much time in going out due to my work load and schedules. I’ll be buying online with it as well with the budget of 50-100$. It would be preferable if it’s cheaper with all that features. No need to be really be, just a medium size for casual wear or smart casual.

In that price range I would recommend the GWM5610 (#1 pick), G9300-1 Mudman (#10) or analog-digital AWGM100B-1A (#9). All have Tough Solar power. The AWGM100B-1A might be more appropriate for you looks-wise but the countdown timer has a limit of 100 minutes (versus 24 hours for the GWM5610 and G9300).

I also stumble while searching the g2900, its cheap and has all the function i need, and i am actually curious regarding its 10yr battery. But i am also having second thoughts because i don’t know the model release year and how long its battery remains if i bought it. Can you maybe give any insights regarding this watch and also can you also recomend something from 150-170$.

Usually the battery on a digital G-Shock will last a lot longer than the estimate if you don’t use the light and functions, not sure about that model though as the estimate is already very long. The G2900 is a current model so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I don’t think there is really anything else to consider in the price range you mentioned, next level would be the Rangeman around $200.

Hi g central…. please forgive me for asking this silly question but i ve tried searching a specific replacement band everywhere but to no avail. I ve got an old functioning g shock g350c that was given by my late mother. I ve used it before and now i ve passed it to my son. Is there any latest g shock replacement band that can fit G350c which can be found in malaysia? Thanx so much.

Hi i’m thinking of buying the g5600e-1, it’s small and light which looks actually good. The problem is that it’s a tough solar, i’m not sure how long the battery will last and if it can be changed (compatible rechargeable battery). I just ned the time and the feeling i have a wrist watch everyday, it feels complete.

My work schedule is 6 am to 6 pm, 7 days a week, so i barely see the sun (depending on the moth) and only if i go for a break for about a minute. I was wondering if this will still or still get charged in the office light, the flourecent light or if i go for a break outside (working in Saudi, it’s pretty hot, especially sunny here)which takes 3-5 mins. I’ll be wearing it everyday just like the old watches i have.

I’ve never had a real watch, something good and which i’ll care, so this will be my very first one and g shock. I wonder if it’s worth for the price as i need a long life watch. I’m willing to change battery as long as it’s rechargeable as well.

A fully digital G-Shock like the G5600E-1 should be able to keep charged sufficiently under office lights and a bit of outdoor light. If the watch isn’t fully charged when you receive it, it may need more direct sunlight to get a full charge. The digital G-Shock watches do not use much power (unless it is a sensor model and you use the sensors a lot). As long as you see the charge level remaining at “High” you don’t have to worry about it. The manual says that 8 hours of indoor fluorescent lighting (500 lux) is required each day for normal daily operations. That will not fully charge the watch from a lower level, but assuming the watch is already fully charged it should be okay, especially if it gets some outdoor light too. If the charge level drops to “Medium,” putting it close to a desk light or next to a window for a while will help. I suggest making sure that Power Save mode is activated. It is possible to change the battery as long as it is the same rechargeable type. I wear a GWM5600A-3 that is over 8 years old and I haven’t had to change the battery yet, and I don’t make any conscious effort to keep the watch charged or spend much time outdoors (though it does get indirect sunlight).

What do you think about GSTS100G-1A, GSTS300G-1A9 and GA1100-9G?

Contemplating between these 3. However, I read that GA1100-9G features are more useful for aviation experts, so I think I should not be picking this for someone who may not be using those features.

As for GSTS100G-1A and GSTS300G-1A9, what are their differences? I see that they are of different shades of gold, specifications wise I am not able to see much differences. Are they both worth the money? And which would you pick if you had to? Or would you happen to have other suggestions for a black and gold watch?

Yes GA1100-9G has the Twin Sensor with compass and thermometer. Personally I would prefer a G-STEEL model as I would want Tough Solar power on an analog G-Shock. I think the GSTS100G-1A and GSTS300G-1A9 might be the same shade of gold. The GSTS300G-1A9 is a smaller model. You can see both of them in this video. I think the Mudmaster GWG-1000GB-1A is one of the best black and gold G-Shocks but is harder to find now.

My son is a new Marine and I want to give him a watch that he can use where ever he is, doing whatever he will be doing. which would be the best all around watch?

I would suggest #10 the G9300-1 Mudman. It is solar-powered with world time and a compass sensor.

I am interest to buy casio g-shock watch for my trekking purpose. Which one would be best, further it should be slim and not to bulky as my wrist is small/thin.

Mudman G-9300 or Rangeman GW-9400 since both have a compass sensor. The G-9300 might be better if you don’t want a large watch, but the GW-9400 is not that large.

i prefer model like GW-5000-1JF. So, could u suggest me like this model for trekking purpose.

You can use any G-Shock you want for trekking.

The Trading Watch. trading time cycles.

What is the coolest wrist watch you have ever seen?

There are literally thousands of unique designs and cool function in wrist watches today.

Much like trading indicators, but as a day trader in Stocks, Futures or Forex, wouldn't you love to have a watch that told you when the time was right to place a trade?

That is exactly how I relate to what the Flux Time Indicator does. when we are trading time cycles. It tells me when is the best time to look for the trade to occur. Whether you are a Swing trader, Scalping trader or Longer term trader, We all know about looking for the right price but what about the right time? Is this even really relevant?

Lets think back for a minute, its like me as a kid, when I just got my first wrist watch. After that glorious day, I knew when supper was going to be ready! No more guessing. Mom made supper at about the same time every day. No more playing outside until I had that funny feeling in my stomach, then running a half mile through the woods to get home, only to discover that either supper isn't ready yet, or I missed it and now all that is left are the scraps.

With the Flux Time Cycle Indicator, ( My "Trading Watch" if you will) , I'm now on time for the trade when we are trading time cycles. What, no way you might say! I use this tool every day I trade, and teach classes on its many facets. Its alway neat to hear the comments from most new users. For what seems like the first time in their trading life, they are actually on time for the trade. No more chasing the trade, or jumping in just 3 minutes too soon, only to watch their stop get hit then, the market go straight to the target!

Now they know when its coming, and 'wear' it when they are trading time cycles, and just like me when I was a kid, they can keep on playing until the time is right to watch for the trade.

Unfortunately its not available in wrist watch form, but if it were, that would be the coolest watch ever!
